Our Approach

Evidence Based

Evidence-based psychotherapies involve approaches and techniques that have been researched in scientific, peer-reviewed settings and are found to be largely effective for the general population. While evidence-based therapies cannot guarantee symptom remission (unfortunately, no therapy can!) they are often considered the “leading edge”, best practice approaches to a wide variety of mental health conditions.

Evidence-based
psychotherapies include:

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and more.

Collaborative

Part of the initial session will involve talking about what brought you to therapy and how you would like to be spending your time in session. Our therapists are experts when it comes to therapeutic technique and skill but you are the expert in your own life. We can make suggestions about what approaches will be most effective but the treatment plan will be determined in collaboration with one another. Generally speaking, the most successful therapeutic experiences are ones where therapists and clients work together to create meaningful change.

Individualized

Our therapists are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques and are able to bring together a collection of strategies based on individual client needs and mutually agreed upon treatment plans. Therapeutic approach can also differ based on the amount of structure the client is looking for. Whereas some clients may be seeking more structured treatment (in the form of protocol-based care, weekly meetings, homework assignments, etc.), others may prefer a more flexible and eclectic approach (such as unstructured talk therapy, general processing and self-reflection, or working towards general life goals).

Ethics

Providing services that exceed ethical standards is of utmost importance to our team at Northern Therapy Collective. Whether your therapist is a Registered Social Worker (regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers, OCSWSSW), or a Registered Psychotherapist (regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, CRPO), they will be held accountable to the Code of Ethics to their respective Regulatory College.
