The Consultation Call: What Is It? … and Other Things to Consider
After browsing several websites and therapist ads, you may have seen reference to the “Free 15 Minute Consultation Call”. At this point, you may be wondering “what is that about?” and “do I really need to do it?” Our opinion is: yes, take the call!
Think about it this way: if I was hiring a carpenter to build me a brand new home, I’d want more information on their services before signing any contracts. How busy is the carpenter? When can they start? Do they have the skills needed to build the type of home I want? How responsive are they when I reach out? Do I feel heard and understood in our initial interactions? Much like hiring a contractor, securing a good fit is of the utmost importance when finding a therapist. It’s only by having those exploratory conversations that you will know for sure if this professional is the right match for you.
The consultation call is your opportunity to interview the therapist and determine if they feel right for you. Consider the following reflection questions as you enter into these consultation calls:
- What are my goals for therapy today, and do they align with what the therapist is able to offer?
- What is their educational background and are they affiliated with any regulatory colleges? This will be important to know if you are planning to use extended health benefit plans, which often stipulate professional coverage.
- What kind of style and approach does the therapist use, and will this match my learning styles and needs?
- Is there a good fit between my personality and theirs? Am I someone who appreciates a soft and gentle voice, or do I prefer a firmer and more direct tone?
- Did we connect? Do I feel they took the time to understand my questions and provide answers that satisfied me?
